AVA Conference 2019 - What's new in 2019?

 

The AVA Innovation, Research and Development Symposium – Sunday 5 May 2019

Following the success of last year’s ASAV Innovation Symposium - the AVA will be offering a broadened AVA Conference Innovation, Research and Development Symposium for 2019.  This session will be open to Industry, University and other clinical veterinary researchers. The symposium will provide a venue for industry and animal researcher to present their clinical research and findings directly to the profession – including both AVA members and non-members.

Researchers are asked to submit scientific abstracts to Scientific Committee for peer review to determine if they are suitable for inclusion. Successful abstracts will be nominated to present a verbal presentation (5 minutes). Unsuccessful submissions will be encouraged to present a poster at the conference.

The Symposium will be held Sunday 5 May 2019 at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Delegate costs
  • Delegates at the AVA Annual Conference and AVA members can attend at no cost.
  • Non-members will be charged $50 for the day.
Presenter costs
  • AVA members speaking: $150
  • Non-members: $350
  • Undergraduate and Post-graduate students – no charge

 

VetEd Talks – Passion for the Profession – Plenary - Wednesday 8 May 2019, 11.30am-1.30pm – Riverside Theatre

Following the great success of last year - The AVA is once again offering an exciting and innovative session - VetEd Talks – Passion in the Profession, at the AVA Annual Conference in Perth May 2019. The aim of the session is for veterinarians to present succinct inspirational stories and food for thought to the profession.

Content:
  • An inspirational, thought provoking or innovative topic with a positive perspective
  • Any science presented must be evidence based
Format and Timing:
  • Eight shortlisted speakers will present for 10 minutes
  • Total session duration is two hours
  • The session will be held as a plenary session on Wednesday, 8 May 2019, from 11:30am – 1:30 pm. There will be no competing conference program to the VetEd talks
Process:
  • An expression of interest for speakers will be sent out to all AVA members
  • Only AVA members can apply
  • All expressions of interest with an accompanying short video to be submitted to speakers@ava.com.au by Friday 2 March 2019 (see VetEd brief for details)
  • A selection committee will shortlist the eight speakers against internal selection criteria by Friday 30 March
  • Speakers will be provided with a brief to assist them in preparing their presentation
  • The presentations will be videoed and promoted widely on the internet through all AVA marketing channels
  • Details of submission process and presentation guidelines will be available shortly
Remuneration:

Due to the expense of getting to Perth this year a remuneration of $500 per interstate speaker will be made.
 

Prize: Prize in the form of a certificate for the most popular talk as voted by audience. Recognition of the prize will occur on the Conference website/Social media/E-newsletters /Podcast of all VetEd talks available for download from AVA website.

 

Food Security Day - Thursday 9 May 2019 - 8.00am-4.30pm

How is the world going to feed itself into the future and what is going to be the effects on the environment, animal and human welfare and biosecurity?  The AVA in conjunction with the Australian Veterinary Conservation Biology (ACVB), Australian Veterinarians for Animal Welfare and Ethics (AVAWE), Australian Cattle Veterinarians (ACV), Sheep, Camelid and Goat Veterinarians (SCGV) and Australian Veterinarians in Public Health (AVPH) groups - is offering a full day’s program to consider the crucial food security issues facing humanity up to 2050. During the day a series of experts from around the world will review the ‘assets’ available to meet this need and to consider the environmental, welfare and biosecurity implications. These will have a global perspective whilst also highlighting the Australian perspective and the role of our animal industries.

 

AVA Poster Competition 2019

The 2019 AVA Conference will be holding a “AVA Poster Competition” as an opportunity for veterinarians to gain recognition for their research or clinical work and to build their professional profile.

Criteria:
  • Research, clinic case reports or case series in veterinary science reflecting cutting edge science or an advancement of knowledge
  • At least one of the authors must be an AVA member and at least one author should be present at conference for the judging of the posters (Wednesday 8 May 2019).
  • Posters that have been presented at other conferences (especially international conferences) within the previous three years are encouraged.  Posters presented more than 3 years ago are ineligible.
  • A maximum of 50 posters will be displayed. Poster Format: No larger than ‘B0’ 1000mm (W) x 1414mm (H)

Prizes:  Early Career Researcher (student or graduate less than 3 years) - $500

Best poster

    • First Prize: $600
    • Second Prize: $250
    • Third Prize: $150

The deadline for submission to the Poster Competition is Monday 8 April 2019

Carer's pass - parents room - child minding

We are delighted to introduce a complimentary Carer’s Pass for delegates attending all AVA conferences and events. This will give the Carer access to the conference, exhibition, and sessions and allows parents/delegates nursing children to be provided with assistance.   The pass does not include catering for carers.   To request a pass please contact Kandy Musgrave, National Events Manager at eventsmanager@ava.com.au. There is no need to register online. Your Carer’s Pass can be collected at the registration desk upon arrival.

Please note there are no arrangements for child care during the Conference. We suggest you check with your accommodation provider who may be able to assist you further with babysitting services during your stay.
